Microsoft recently made the following announcement:
“All good things must come to an end, even Windows 7 (& Server 2008). After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide support or security updates for PCs running Windows 7. You can keep the good times rolling by moving to Windows 10.”
So what does that mean for me?
- No further Windows Updates, Including Critical Security Updates
- No compliance (if you are subject to HIPAA / DFS / GDPR etc.)
- Newer Hardware will no longer be compatible (Printers / Scanners etc.)
After Windows 7 “end of life,” you can continue to use the OS, but at your own risk. New computer Viruses and other Malware are developed all the time, without the security updates to fend them off, your data and your systems are vulnerable.
Be Proactive!
If you still have systems running Windows 7 / Server 2008, now is the time to start planning* for the upgrade!
If the system hardware is still up to date, this can likely be accomplished with an in-place upgrade, which typically involves about 45 minutes of downtime.
